The Via Francigena is a pilgrimage route that was used in the Middle Ages to reach Rome from northern France. Its name means “french way”. The usual route corresponds to a testimony of Sigeric, archbishop of Canterbury who undertook the journey towards the year 990. The current route, for example, starts in Canterbury, England and is 1,800 km long. It crosses Tuscany and has contributed to the region’s reputation and its cities.
A recent project, initiated by the Tuscany region, seeks to revitalize this route, which was neglected by pilgrims. In Tuscany, 38 towns are crossed for 15 stages (18 to 25 km on average). The path is designed to be walked, cycled or horseback.
