At the southern end of the Natural park of Maremma, Talamone is a small village perched on a promontory overlooking the western end of the small homonymous gulf, also tourist resort with its beaches and small port.

Presentation

The historic centre is protected by medieval walls, and from its fortress overlooking the sea you can see the Monte Argentario or the Giglio Island. The locality has tourist structures, bars and hotels.
The Etruscans had already settled here. The Romans took over the city called Tlamun, then it was a fief of the Aldobrandeschi in the Middle Ages who built the fortress.
There is a small rocky beach just at the foot of the village, with beautiful seabed, especially appreciated for diving. On the other side, the beach of Bagno delle Donne is also rocky but equipped and has facilities. About 2 km east are large beaches including the Fertilia beach.

The historic center is very small, its main attraction is the Rocca Aldobrandesca located at the top with its old stones including 4 restored towers, and especially the breathtaking view. It dates back to the 13th century, like the ramparts of Talamone, and in the 16th century it was integrated into the defensive system of the coastal strip controlled by Siena.

The Orbetello Lagoon Aquarium is interested in the flora and fauna of the Orbetello Lagoon, including bream, bass and eel, as well as sea turtles from the Tartanet. Part of the museum documents lagoon traditions, such as fishing techniques, trawling, etc.

The nearby hill of Talmonaccio, overlooking the coast further east on the other side of the gulf of Talamone, enjoys a superb panoramic position. There are also the remains of an Etruscan temple where the famous “Talamone’s pediment” was found with the representation of the tragedy of the Seven against Thebes.

About 1.5 km to the north, you can see the remains of a Roman villa (visible from outside a fenced enclosure), as well as a Roman cistern at one of the pedestrian entrances to the Maremma park.
