Sarteano is a village located between the Val d’Orcia and the Val di Chiana, few visited by tourists. Its castle is the main attraction, with the archaeological museum also very interesting that documents the Etruscan tombs of the surroundings.
Its territory has been occupied since the Neolithic, as evidenced by the discoveries in the Bear Cave. There was then an important Etruscan presence from the 9th century BC. They left necropolises, with important tombs such as the tomb of the Quadriga Infernale of the 4th century BC.

Things to do in Sarteano

The Castle of Sarteano, known as Cassero, is a powerful square that dates back to the 10th century AD.
The 16th-century Gabrielli Palace houses the Sarteano Archaeological Museum, where finds from Etruscan necropolises (including the Pianacce necropolis) are gathered, or the reconstruction of the Tomb of the Infernal Quadrige (Tomba del Quadriga Infernale) with his remarkable paintings.
The village also has several interesting churches, with the collegiate church dedicated to Saints Lawrence and Apollinaire, the church of San Francesco whose elegant facade dates from the 15th century, San Martino in Foro with beautiful paintings. There are also several historic palaces, including the Communal and Piccolomini Palaces, as well as the Arrischianti Theatre.
