In the central square of Piazza del Duomo, the Palazzo Communale (the City Hall) is composed mainly of the Sala Dante (Dante’s Hall), decorated with cycles of important frescoes on the themes of courtly and chivalric and the Pinacoteca with works from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century.
From the palace, you can access the Torre Grossa, the highest tower in the city, where you can enjoy a beautiful view (after more than 200 steps).

Palazzo del Comune

This palace is one of the most interesting monuments in San Gimignano, built between 1289 and 1298 on the ruins of an old building.
The interior courtyard was enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries, and later it was decorated with frescoes depicting the emblems of public figures.

In the Dante’s Hall, where he was hosted as ambassador from Florence to negotiate a peace treaty, we can see the beautiful Virgin and Child by Lippo Memmi (1317) and the frescoes inspired by the chivalry of Azzo di Masetto (late 13th century).
The other important room is the Hall of the Podestà, with famous frescoes on the theme of courtly love by Memmo Filippuccio (early 14th century).

Pinacoteca

The journey through the palace continues with the Art Gallery (Pinacoteca in Italian). It is possible to discover the artists who accompanied the history of San Gimignano, first under the Florentine occupation like Coppo di Marcovaldo and Azzo di Masetto, and then with the Sienese like Rinaldo of the second half of the thirteenth century. From the late fourteenth century we find the Sienese Memmo of Filippuccio, Lippo Memmi, then the alternation between Siena and Florence from the end of the fourteenth to the fifteenth century with Taddeo di Bartolo, Lorenzo di Niccolo. The Florentines who settled in the Renaissance, with Filippino Lippi, Benozzo Gozzoli, Benedetto da Maiano. The end of the visit passes through a large canvas by Pinturicchio (1511) and in the courtyard there is a fresco by Sodoma (early 16th century) and the old bell from 1328.
