The Monte Argentario is a very beautiful site to the south of the Tuscan coast, in the province of Grosseto. It attracts visitors for its various features: the marine environment, the mild climate, the beautiful rugged coast with its small coves, the lagoon, its village of Porto Ercole with its marina, or its trails around its mountain reaching 635 meters.
Presentation
Until the 18th century, Argentario was an island, when alluvial deposits gradually created two sand lagoons that connected it to the coast and thus formed the lagoon. Between them is the village of Ortebello on a spit of land extended to the mountain by a road on an artificial dam.
This “mount” is surrounded by the sea and connected to the coast by the tombolos, the two isthmus of Giannella and Feniglia, each with their long sandy beaches. Man has over time arranged the interior of the land in terraces to cultivate vines and olive trees, the rest being covered by maquis. Trails wind through the area, offering beautiful views with the sea in the background.
There are two main towns on the Argentario, Porto Ercole in the south-east and Porto San Stefano in the north-west. The first is more intimate and with its old village and marina, while the second is more active with commercial and tourist ports.
Off the west of the promontory, the charming Giglio Island is easily accessible from Porto San Stefano.
The coast is very beautiful and best discovered by the sea. From the land some small beaches are accessible, often by trails. Much of the coast is “privatized”, with many luxurious villas.
