The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena is an important Italian museum, especially for its collection of ” paintings on gold background ” from the 14th and 15th centuries in Siena. It is housed in the Palazzo Buonsignori and Brigidi, inaugurated in 1932.
The works bear witness to pictorial art in Siena from the 12th to the 17th centuries. The following Sienese artists are mentioned: Duccio di Buoninsegna, Piero and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, Sassetta, Francesco di Giorgio, Matteo di Giovanni, Sodoma and Beccafumi.

The visit is chronological, with first on the second floor, the origins of Sienese painting until the second half of the fifteenth century, including famous painters such as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, Sano di Pietro, Giovanni di Paolo, Sassetta, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti (14th century), Matteo di Giovanni and Francesco di Giorgio (15th century).

The first floor exhibits 16th-century works, including Beccafumi and Sodoma, the most important representatives of Sienese Mannerism. A recent section shows a collection of works by Sienese artists active between the late 16th and 15th centuries: Francesco Vanni, Alessandro Casolari, Rutilio Manetti.

The third floor houses works from the Spannocchi – Piccolomini Collection, with paintings by artists of the 15th and 16th centuries from Northern Italy, Flanders, the Netherlands and Germany, including those of Lorenzo Lotto and Albrecht Durer.
