The Maremma Natural Park, also known as the Uccellina Park, stretches over almost 10,000 hectares along the coast, with nearly 25 km of coastline from Principina a Mare to Talamone northward and up to 3.5 km inland.
This protected area preserves a rich nature and fauna, formed by a wet plain, marshland and pine forest in the north, and especially a long coastal ridge of very green hills of the Uccellina Mountains, culminating at 471 meters. They descend towards the sea with cliffs and coves. From this landscape emerge various Etruscan, Roman and medieval remains such as watchtowers and the remains of Abbey of San Rabano.

Presentation and tour

The northern plain is crossed by the Ombrone with its mouth and the Trappola marshland. South side of the river extend beyond marshes, water reservoirs, dunes, meadows and a large pine forest, crossed by artificial channels dating back to the time of the bonuses made by the Lorraine. Wildlife flourishes, with large colonies of marsh birds and some raptors.
Herds of Maremma cattle and horses living in the wild are seen.

The central and southern part is formed by the green hills of Uccellina, with dense vegetation of Mediterranean type maquis.
Towers crown reliefs such as those of the Castelmartino, Collelungo, Torre Bassa, Cala di Forno, Bella Marsilia, Torre Rivolta, Torre delle Cannelle and Torre di Capo d’uomo. There is also the remarkable abbey of San Rabano.
This maquis pleases many animals, such as boars, deer, foxes, goats, various reptiles and a multitude of birds.

The coastal portion is one of the few virgin coastlines in Italy, and also one of the most beautiful. On the coast is the beautiful cove of Cala di Forno, the «beach of the park» and pretty coves like that of Cannelle.

Abbey of San Rabano

The remains of the Abbey of San Rabano are still imposing, remains of the monastery of S. Maria in Alberese. This complex was built by the Benedictines in the eleventh century, active until 1475 when Siena transferred the seat of the priory to Alberese.
The church dates from the eleventh-twelfth centuries, the cupola from the fourteenth century, as the watchtower, called Torre dell’Uccellina.
