Montepulciano is a beautiful small town of almost 14,000 inhabitants, visited for its picturesque medieval center and by lovers of good wines. It is perched at 605 metres above sea level, between charming Tuscan hills planted with vines and olive trees, straddling the two valleys of Valdichiana and Val d’Orcia.
The surrounding vineyards provide the material for producing one of the best wines in Italy, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. It is also a region known for its cheese and charcuterie, as well as pasta, honey and lentils.

The city developed mainly in the early Middle Ages, then in the Renaissance with beautiful palaces. The present historic centre is protected by 16th century fortifications and at its heart is the most beautiful of its squares, Piazza Grande.

On the last Sunday in August, during the Bravìo delle Botti (the Palio of Montepulciano) the 8 districts of the city compete by rolling heavy barrels.

Montepulciano is located 50 km from Siena. In the surrounding area there are many beautiful villages of the Val d’Orcia such as Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino and San Quirico d’Orcia. You can also relax at the thermal springs of Bagno Vignoni.

Monuments and heritage

The historic centre of Montepulciano is medieval and Renaissance, built on an elongated hill, protected by its ancient wall and keeping access doors. Its alleys and stairs wind between the beautiful imposing stone palaces, joining the Piazza Grande to the west, and at this western end is the Medici Fortress. This central square is embellished by the majestic presence of the Communal Palace, other ancient palaces and the cathedral. The San Biagio Temple is one of the most beautiful examples of the Tuscan Renaissance.
In addition to the local shops, you can also visit wineries and taste their wine.
