Lucignano is a pleasant little medieval village in the province of Arezzo, called “The pearl of Valdichiana”, recognized with the «orange flag» and ranked by the «most beautiful villages of Italy», historically at the crossroads between Arezzo, Siena and Perugia.
It is perched on a small hill, elliptical in shape with a walled area and a particular medieval urbanism with its main street also elliptic. Typical restaurants where you can enjoy good local cuisine are located in the alleys.
Things to do and see in Lucignano
- The Piazza del Tribunale in the heart of the town, with the Palazzo Comunale, the San Francesco complex and the Collegiate Church
- The Collegiate Church of the Archangel Saint-Michel founded in 1594, the main church of the city, above the beautiful staircase designed by Andrea Pozzo, famous father and Jesuit master who also designed the marble altar. - The Franciscan complex with the monastery and the church San Francesco, in Franciscan Gothic style from 1240. Inside is the fresco Triumph of Death, in a 14th- 15th century cycle of frescoes centred on the life of Saint Francis by Taddeo di Bartolo and Bartolo di Fredi.
- The Municipal Museum in the 13th century Palazzo Communale (the former Palazzo Pretorio), with works by Sienese artists from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including the richly decorated 2.60 metre high medieval jewellery Golden Tree. This is in the Audience Hall with its 15th century frescoes.
