The lower part of the Val d’Elsa is in the province of Florence, the upper part being in that of Siena. The landscape is marked by beautiful hills, often with cereal crops.
Its most interesting towns are Certaldo, Empoli which is the largest town, and San Miniato further downstream in the province of Pisa.

Sacred Mount of San Vivaldo
Special sanctuary, San Vivaldo is also referred as the “Jerusalem of Tuscany”. It is surrounded by woods a few kilometers from Montaione.
Its origin dates back to the early fourteenth century when the brother Vivaldo Stricchi of San Gimignano retired as a hermit.
The complex of chapels was built between 1500 and 1515 at the initiative of Brother Thomas of Florence, decorated with polychrome terracotta inspired by the life and passion of Christ. The temples are arranged to reproduce the plan of the Jerusalem of the time. Pope Leo X made it a substitute pilgrimage site by a bull.
