The Duomo or the Collegiata di San Gimignano is located on the west side of the square with the same name.
This is a remarkable monument of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany.
The church dates back to a simple priory built around 1000. It was consecrated in 1148 by Pope Eugene III, who returned to Rome along the Via Francigena.
It was enlarged and embellished from the 13th century with the participation of great artists, until the 17th century.
The interior of the basilica contains remarkable frescoes from the Middle Ages: the wall on the right is covered by episodes from the New Testament attributed to the school of Simone Martini (beginning of XIVth century), and the one on the left of the Old Testament episodes by Bartolo di Fredi (mid-14th century).
On the counter-façade there is a large fresco of the 15th century representing Saint Sebastian’s Martyrdom, as well as two wooden statues by Jacopo della Quercia, with the Angel of the Annunciation and Mary. At the top, the frescoes by Taddeo di Bartolo represent the Last Judgment inspired by Dante’s Inferno, with the saint and the cursed.
In a chapel of the transept is a crucifix in polychrome wood from the thirteenth century.
On the right, the famous Chapel of Santa Fina dates back to 1468, with its valuable frescoes by Domenico Ghirlandaio depicting Saint Gregory announcing his imminent death and funeral to Santa Fina.
