Castiglione d’Orcia

Castiglione d’Orcia is a proud village in the Val d’Orcia, medieval town at the foot of its mighty 14th century Rocca Aldobrandeschi which dominates the entire valley from the foothills of Mount Amiata.
The heart of the village is the square  Piazza il Vecchietta, named after Il Vecchietta, nicknamed after Lorenzo di Pietro (1412-1480), famous painter and sculptor. The Sala d’Arte San Giovanni is a small museum located in an old oratory, which houses works from the Sienese school of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, including Simone Martini and Vecchietta.
There are also palaces, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena, and that of Saints Stefano e Degna.
The streets go up to the ruins of the imposing castle (still in work in 2022), whose origin dates back to about the eleventh century, with its vast panorama.

Rocca d’Orcia

Close to Castiglione is the small hamlet of Rocca d’Orcia, where the suggestive medieval tower of Tentennano has a superb view from the top of its limestone spur. Although of older origin, it was built in the thirteenth century by the counts Tignosi da Tintinnano, rebuilt in 1262 by the Sienese, possession of the Salimbeni in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
This fortress in strategic position controlled the Via Francigena, and the access to the sea by the Maremma.

Surroundings

Not far from Castiglione, you can discover the Abbey of Sant’Antimo and the slopes of Mount Amiata Bagno Vignoni with its thermal pools, as well as the villages of Campiglia and Vivo d’Orcia.
