Presentation
Since antiquity, Carrara has been famous for its white marble, extracted from the hundreds of quarries that surround the city. Little visited, however, you can still find the testimonies of its industrial and mining past, when marble extraction attracted workers from all over Italy. Activities that are much less likely to provide jobs today.
Close to the coast, the centre is quite small and you can visit some of the most important quarries in the area.
On the coast Marina di Carrara is an active seaside resort, especially in summer when its beautiful beach is taken by storm.
The region was already inhabited in the 9th century BC by Celtic ligures.
The city was considered a capital of Italian and international anarchist thought. It is still popular today for some people, although the form has become more folk.
